Peace of Mind Was the Product—And Not Everyone Wanted It

When we started MySmartPlans, our idea was simple: support projects so the people responsible for them could go home at night with peace of mind.

Maybe they would not have to miss another birthday party. Maybe they could take the family vacation without carrying a project crisis in their pocket. Maybe owners, contractors, workers, and stakeholders could finally trust that the record was organized, the facts were visible, and the answers were ready when decisions had to be made.

We believed that was an idea everyone could support.

We were wrong.

At a networking event, I was excited to meet a union labor leader. I thought he would be thrilled by a system designed to support members, preserve the work record, and bring accountability to the jobsite.

Instead, he grabbed my hand, pulled me close, and said:

“We know who you are, and we do not like you. No one in the history of this industry has organized all this data.”

At first, it sounded like a threat. Later, I understood it as confirmation.

Organized data changes the balance of power. When the project record is complete, disappearing files, shifting stories, confusing naming conventions, and information hoarding stop working. The people doing the work can defend their contracts. Owners can see what is happening. Decisions can be made from evidence instead of pressure.

The following day, I saw a report in the local paper that the same individual had been charged in a federal case tied to alleged jobsite conduct. A charge is not a conviction, and the two events were not proof of one another. But the contrast stayed with me.

We were never building a weapon. We were building peace of mind.

The established taxi industry did not welcome Uber. The model challenged who controlled the ride. But riders quickly understood the power of seeing the driver, the route, the arrival time, and the receipt.
